Square neckline wedding dresses: the frame around the bodice

A square neckline creates a horizontal front edge with upright sides. The opening can be deep or shallow, and the corners may be sharp or slightly rounded. Strap width changes the strength of this frame without changing its basic geometry.

Afida and Cher

Afida places a square opening between broad straps above a floral-lace ball gown with glitter, beading and raised flowers. The substantial upper frame meets an expansive skirt. Cher draws a narrower, slightly square edge beneath spaghetti straps; floral lace continues over a close mermaid and fit-and-flare line. The neckline is related, but the surrounding scale changes it completely.

The straight upper edge is especially visible when the fabric around it remains clean. Lace or embroidery can soften its border while keeping the right-angled impression. A straight neckline shares the horizontal top but does not necessarily have the same upright sides; a scoop neckline rounds the opening instead.

Does square mean strapless?

No. Afida has wide straps and Cher has narrow ones; the word describes the shape of the front opening.
