U-Back Wedding Dresses: A Rounded Rear Line
A U-shaped opening can be shallow or low, but its curve stays soft where the back meets the straps. Unlike a pointed V, the line turns gradually toward the center. A broad strap makes the opening feel framed; a narrow one leaves more of the shoulders visible. Smooth fabric keeps the edge clear, while lace can soften it with texture.
Brie and the open upper back
Brie places a low U-back between wide straps. The rounded opening contrasts with its square front neckline, so the gown changes character as it turns. A slender belt marks the natural waist before the full skirt opens into a chapel train. From behind, that volume gives the exposed upper back a defined fabric setting.
The rear contour is the useful distinction here: V-back dresses taper to a point, while open-back gowns include several shapes and depths. A U-back can therefore be open without producing the same angular effect as a V.
