Asymmetric Waist Wedding Dresses

An asymmetric waist does not meet the skirt in a level line across the body. The seam may rise, dip or angle to one side, creating direction and a more dynamic transition from bodice to skirt.

Asymmetric waist wedding dresses

An asymmetric waist lets the bodice-to-skirt transition travel at an angle or change height around the body. The slant can echo a diagonal neckline, run alongside draping or break up an otherwise straight silhouette.

Two uses of an angled transition

Carven pairs an asymmetric waist with a one-shoulder line, repeating diagonal movement above and through the torso. Chantel uses draping against a narrower sheath or column form. In Carven, satin ruching travels diagonally past the natural waist. Chantel crosses satin draping over a strapless bodice and continues into a high-slit column. Both make the waistline part of the design rather than a horizontal division between bodice and skirt.

The effect depends on where the angled edge begins and ends; fabric folds can sharpen it or make it softer. A natural waist gives a level transition for comparison.
